Launch your first live trivia session in minutes with our step-by-step guide.

Avalanche Trivia is a live, host-led trivia race. Hosts run everything from a browser, players join with a six-character code, and the mountain board keeps everyone in sync via Firebase.

Host checklist

  1. Create or sign in to your host account at `/login` (Google or email/password).
  2. Open the Host dashboard and either reuse an existing question set or create a new one from the Question Sets page.
  3. Start a game from the Games view; Avalanche generates a six-character join code automatically.
  4. Share the join code or link (`/join?code=ABC123`) and keep the lobby open until every player appears in the list.
  5. Use the Options panel to adjust checkpoints or weather if you want something other than the defaults.
  6. Press `Start Game` to move everyone from the waiting room into the live mountain board and monitor the real-time logs during play.

Tip: keep the host dashboard open in its own browser window so the mountain board never pauses while you reference other materials.

Player checklist

  1. Open `/join` in a browser and enter the six-character code provided by the host.
  2. Pick the display name you want to appear on the mountain leaderboard; no account is required for players.
  3. Stay in the waiting room until the host starts the session – a looping video confirms you are connected.
  4. Watch for the encouragement banner and progress meter after each answer to confirm your move was recorded.
  5. If you lose connection, reopen the join page: local storage remembers your player ID so you return to the same slot.
  6. Use the shield prompt wisely – three correct answers in the shield window unlock protection from the next avalanche.

Tip: if the waiting room stops animating, refresh the page before the host starts so the reconnect happens while the lobby is still open.

Guide players through avatar creation

The avatar studio now includes an in-app instruction overlay and improved randomizer. Use these steps to help players customise their climber before the game starts.

  1. Launch the avatar studio (`/play/avatar?gameId=YOUR_GAME_ID&playerId=PLAYER_ID&code=CODE`) from the lobby or by sharing the direct link with players.
  2. Click the Instructions button in the top menu to review the six-step creation guide or share the same steps verbally if you are screen sharing.
  3. Work left to right through Skin, Eyes, Eyebrow, Nose, Mouth, and Spot before picking hair and facial accessories.
  4. Use the Accessory and Costumes categories to add glasses, jewelry, or themed outfits, then choose a Jacket and Background.
  5. Need inspiration? Tap Randomize — it now cycles through every hairstyle, accessory, and background option while respecting colour palettes.
  6. Players can download their finished avatar or simply hit Save; the layered version syncs straight to the waiting room preview and host board.

Tip: encourage players to keep the studio open in a separate tab; any saved changes sync instantly to the waiting room preview.
